Modified on Fri, 4 Sep at 11:44 AM

What this article is about
This article explains what an Inter-Deanery Transfer (IDT) is, who it applies to, and the main eligibility rules.

Who this is for
Doctors in specialty training who want to transfer from one UK training region to another.

What you need to know

  • An IDT allows an eligible doctor in training to request a transfer to another UK training region.
  • The process is intended to support doctors whose circumstances mean they need to move region.
  • There is no automatic right to transfer.
  • Transfers depend on meeting national IDT eligibility criteria, providing required supporting evidence, a suitable funded training post being available in the receiving region, and the transfer being possible within the published national transfer window.
  • Post funding and training numbers do not automatically move with the doctor in training.
  • The national IDT arrangements do not apply to Foundation doctors, dental trainees or military doctors in training.

What to do

  1. Check the national IDT eligibility criteria before applying.
  2. Make sure you have enough time remaining in your programme to meet the criteria.
  3. Prepare your supporting evidence before the application window opens.
  4. Submit your application during the published national IDT application window.
  5. Wait for the national IDT process to complete before making any placement or relocation arrangements.

If this does not work
If you do not meet the national criteria, your application may not be considered. If your circumstances are urgent or exceptional, you should seek advice through the appropriate support route so that your situation can be reviewed.

Who to contact
Submit a query through the PGMDE Support Portal using the IDT query route.
