What this article is about
This article explains how statutory leave or sickness absence may affect training time, rotations, ARCP and your expected CCT date.
Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who are taking, planning or returning from statutory leave or sickness absence.
What you need to know
- Time away from training may affect your expected CCT date or programme end date.
- The effect depends on the length of absence, your training programme, curriculum requirements, WTE, ARCP outcomes and whether required capabilities have been met.
- ARCP panels review progression using the evidence available and may take absence into account.
- Statutory leave or sickness absence may affect rotations, placement dates, employer onboarding and return-to-training planning.
- Your training record should accurately reflect your absence and return date.
- If absence affects your progress, additional training time or an adjusted CCT date may be needed.
- You should not assume your CCT date has changed until the relevant training process confirms this.
- Visa or sponsorship implications may need to be reviewed if absence affects training dates or employment arrangements.
What to do
- Tell your employer and follow their leave or sickness process.
- Tell your Training Programme Director or educational supervisor if the absence affects your training.
- Raise a query through the PGMDE Support Portal so HET can update your training record where needed.
- Check whether your ARCP date, placement dates or CCT date may need review.
- Keep records of leave dates, employer confirmation and any medical or statutory documentation.
- Complete SuppoRTT forms where return planning is needed.
- Check your training record after your leave or return has been processed.
If this does not work
If your CCT date, placement or absence record appears wrong, raise a query through the PGMDE Support Portal and include the confirmed dates and any relevant evidence.
Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for training record, ARCP, CCT date or placement queries. Contact your employer for pay, contract, HR, occupational health and rota matters.

- Updating absence and return information in training records.
