Less Than Full Time (LTFT) training: Overview and eligibility

Modified on Thu, 24 Sep at 10:18 AM

What this article is about
This article explains what Less Than Full Time (LTFT) training is, who can apply, and the main rules that apply.

Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who want to train at less than full-time hours.

What you need to know

  • LTFT training allows eligible trainees to continue in an approved training programme at a reduced whole-time equivalent (WTE).
  • All postgraduate doctors in training can apply for LTFT training either at the point of application for entry to training or after being accepted into training.
  • You must still meet the same curriculum and progression requirements as full-time trainees.
  • LTFT training changes your working percentage but does not lower the standard required for progression.
  • LTFT arrangements may affect your placement length, rotation pattern, CCT date, ARCP timing and employer rota arrangements.
  • Applications should normally be submitted at least 16 weeks before the proposed start date or next rotation change.
  • Approval may depend on educational approval, employer or host organisation agreement, programme capacity and any required evidence.
  • If you hold a Skilled Worker or Tier 2 visa, LTFT working may affect minimum salary and sponsorship requirements.

What to do

  1. Read the LTFT guidance before applying.
  2. Discuss your intention to apply with your Training Programme Director or nominated senior educator.
  3. Check the application window and deadline.
  4. Decide the WTE percentage you are requesting.
  5. Gather any evidence required for your reason for applying.
  6. Submit the LTFT application through the correct route.
  7. Wait for written confirmation before making changes to your work pattern.

If this does not work
If you are unsure whether LTFT is right for your circumstances, raise a query through the PGMDE Support Portal before applying. If your application is urgent or outside the usual window, explain why and provide supporting information.

Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for LTFT application and training record queries. Contact your Training Programme Director or educational supervisor for training suitability discussions. Contact your employer for rota, pay, contract and local working pattern queries.
