What this article is about
This article explains what to do if you want to extend your OOP, return early, or return to training at the planned date.
Who this is for
Doctors and dentists in training who are already on OOP or preparing to return.
What you need to know
- Return to programme should be planned before and during the OOP period.
- You should remain in contact with your Training Programme Director while on OOP.
- If you want to extend or shorten your OOP, you must apply formally and obtain approval.
- You should normally apply to extend or curtail OOP at least six months before the approved end date.
- Early return is not guaranteed and depends on whether a suitable training post is available.
- Returning from OOP may require a return to practice plan.
- The school or programme may need to assess your return to clinical training, including length of time away and maintenance of clinical skills.
- SuppoRTT may be appropriate when planning your return.
What to do
- Check your approved OOP end date.
- Discuss your return or extension plans with your Training Programme Director as early as possible.
- If you want to extend or return early, submit a formal request through the correct route.
- Provide reasons for the change and any required supervisor or programme support.
- Confirm whether your visa or sponsorship position is affected.
- Complete any required return to training or SuppoRTT forms.
- Wait for confirmation of your placement and return arrangements before making firm plans.
- Arrange an early educational supervisor review after return.
If this does not work
If a suitable placement is not immediately available, your return may be delayed or you may be offered an alternative placement. If you do not apply in time, an extension or early return may not be possible.
Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for OOP extension, curtailment or return queries. Contact your Training Programme Director or educational supervisor for return planning.
