Requesting reasonable adjustments for recruitment and training

Modified on Tue, 8 Sep at 11:53 AM

What this article is about
This article explains how to request reasonable adjustments during recruitment or training.

Who this is for
Applicants, doctors and dentists in training who need adjustments because of a disability, health condition, neurodivergence, temporary condition or other relevant need.

What you need to know

  • Reasonable adjustments are intended to reduce barriers and support fair access to recruitment, assessment, training and work-related activities.
  • Adjustments may apply during recruitment, interview, assessment, events, training or placement planning.
  • Recruitment adjustments and training or workplace adjustments may be managed through different processes.
  • Employer workplace adjustments are usually managed by your employer.
  • Training-related adjustments may need discussion with HET, the Training Programme Director, educational supervisor, employer or occupational health.
  • You should request adjustments as early as possible so there is time to consider and arrange support.

What to do

  1. Identify what adjustment you need and where it applies.
  2. For recruitment, follow the adjustment request process provided in the recruitment guidance or applicant communications.
  3. For training, raise the request through the appropriate support route or discuss it with your educational supervisor or Training Programme Director.
  4. If the adjustment relates to your workplace, speak to your employer or line manager.
  5. Provide relevant supporting information if requested.
  6. Agree how the adjustment will be recorded and reviewed.
  7. Tell the relevant team if your needs change.

If this does not work
If you are unsure whether the adjustment is recruitment, training or employer-related, raise a query through the PGMDE Support Portal and briefly explain what support you need and where it applies.

Who to contact
Use the PGMDE Support Portal for training-related adjustment queries. Contact the recruitment team for recruitment process adjustments. Contact your employer for workplace adjustments.

What HET can and cannot help with
HET can help with

  • Advising on training-related adjustment routes.
  • Considering adjustments that relate to training processes where HET is responsible.
  • Liaising with programme teams where appropriate.
  • Directing you to the correct team if the adjustment sits elsewhere.

HET cannot help with

  • Approving employer workplace adjustments or equipment.
  • Replacing occupational health advice.
  • Guaranteeing a preferred placement, employer or rota.
  • Providing legal, clinical, financial or immigration advice.
